The Chess Games of Adolph Anderssen: Master of Attack

Kingside attack, executed always with aggressive optimism, resourcefulness and daring. In Anderssen, moreover, this relentless drive to checkmate is backed up by explosive tactical brilliance, leaving in its wake combinations that have filled anthologies for generations.This volume features 897 games - with only 94 draws! - richly annotated by the old Masters, and thoroughly updated for the 21st century. Also included are 80 chess problems composed by Anderssen, and a memorial essay here translated into English for the first time. Complete opening and player indexes plus 367 diagrams round out this massive chess biography of Adolph Anderssen, arguably the greatest of the great Masters.

50 Ways to Win at Chess

In a sequel to the hugely successful 50 Essential Chess Lessons, Steve Giddins now presents 50 games that each illustrate an important winning method. This engaging and highly readable book is a painless way to build your personal arsenal of techniques and ideas.

The games are mostly from the modern era, but with a few classic examples chosen to show key themes in as clear a way as possible. In these cases, the defender may have never seen the critical idea before, and fails to react appropriately. We then move on to more complex examples where the attacker needs to overcome stiffer resistance. Giddins repeatedly shows that despite the tactical complexity of many of these battles, the fundamental concepts can be grasped by all chess-players, and will help them navigate through apparently intimidating terrain.

The many topics include:
* Attacking weak colour complexes
* The principle of two weaknesses
* Choosing the right exchanges
* Devastating opening preparation
* Manoeuvring in 'restraint' structures
* Handling must-win situations

The year is 1950. Michael Corleone is nearing the end of his exile in Sicily. The Godfather has commanded Michael to bring a young Sicilian bandit named Salvatore Guiliano back with him to America. Art of Chess Analysis

All Grandmasters are able to devote themselves body and soul to actually playing a game of chess, but few indeed are able to the same when analysing the games of their fellow Grandmasters. Yet it was by this method that Timman, following the teachings of Botvinnik, trained himself to become one of the finest analysts in the world - and why his annotations to this carefully selected collection of games are acknowledged to be of a depth and quality rarely seen in chess literature. Each game is critically dissected, and each claim of a mistake backed up by hard analysis. In striving for perfection, Timman seeks to discover the truth of each game; to provide not just a wonderful annotated game, but to present the definitive evaluation behind a top-class struggle between two great minds. This book, long hailed as classic, has been fully revised by Timman for this enlarged new edition. Dutch Grandmaster Jan Timman has been one of the world's leading players since the mid-1970s. His outstanding tournament record includes victories at Linares, Wijk aan Zee, Amsterdam, Tilburg and numerous other top-class events. He is also an exceptional match player, and has been a permanent fixture in the final stages of the World Championship cycle over the past 10 years.

There is no doubt that playing the Open Games is one of Black's most reliable and yet aggressive ways of meeting White's favourite opening move, 1 e4. Experts also agree that playing these fundamental openings is a crucial step in the development of a chess player, while moving up to the highest level it provides the battleground for countless duals between the likes of World number one Garry Kasparov, Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik. It's true that some Black players are put off by the seemingly endless number of variations they can be faced with, as White can choose a between the King's Gambit, Vienna Game, Scotch Opening, Bishop's Opening and a number of wild and offbeat gambits. However, in Play 1 e4 e5! Nigel Davies provides a complete answer to this perennial problem by offering a concise and practical repertoire for the Black player, whilst crucially including a dependable defence to the Ruy Lopez – White's most popular attacking try in the Open Games. Davies is the perfect choice for this subject, having been battle-hardened by years of international competition in these openings.

Three Moves Ahead: What Chess Can Teach You about Business (Even If You've Never Played)

In today’s fast-moving Information Age, traditional business-planning tools are rapidly becoming obsolete. Yet the competitive, ever-changing marketplace demands that executives move quickly or risk becoming relics. In Three Moves Ahead, business leader and chess expert Bob Rice offers an entertaining, practical response to this modern dilemma. He shows how the world’s top executives use chess tactics to thrive in the face of incalculable complexities and unexpected change. Written for nonplayers, this witty, smart guide is filled with real-world examples of how to win the game of business by applying chess strategies honed from over 1,000 years of competition. With incisive prose, Rice clearly shows how to use these principles to attack competitors, defend turf, and crack new markets. He demonstrates how a “Strong Square” strategy drove Adobe’s rise from niche player to industry powerhouse, how Kodak is reviving its fortunes with an “Exchange Sacrifice,” and how Google is creating holes in Microsoft’s position with a “Minority Attack.” Most importantly, Three Moves Ahead also shows how to “Stay Ahead On the Clock” and avoid the fate of companies like Polaroid, Gateway, and our dearly departed Ma Bell.

The Kings of New York: A Year Among the Geeks, Oddballs, and Genuises Who Make Up America's Top HighSchool Chess Team

An award-winning sportswriter takes you inside a year with the nation’s top high school chess team.

With strict admission standards and a progressive curriculum, Brooklyn’s Edward R. Murrow High School has long been one of New York’s public-education success stories, serving a diverse neighborhood of immigrants and minorities and ranking among the nation’s best high schools. At Murrow, there are no sports teams, and the closest thing to jocks are found on the school’s powerhouse chess team, which annually competes for the national championship.

In The Kings of New York sportswriter Michael Weinreb follows the members of the Murrow chess team through an entire season, from cash games in Washington Square Park to city and state tournaments to the SuperNationals in Nashville, where this eclectic bunch competes against private schoolers and suburbanites. Along the way, Weinreb brings to life a number of colorful characters: the Yale-educated calculus teacher (and former semipro hockey player) who guides the savants while struggling to find funding for his team; an aspiring rapper and tournament hustler who plays with cutthroat instinct; the team’s lone girl, a shy Ukrainian immigrant; the Puerto Rican teen from the rough neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant who plays an ingenious opening gambit named the Orangutan; and the Lithuanian immigrant and team star whose chess rating is climbing toward grandmaster status.

In the bestselling tradition of such books as Word Freak and Friday Night Lights, The Kings of New York is a riveting look inside the world of competitive chess and an inspiring profile of young genius.

Point count chess;: An accurate guide to winning chess

Perhaps more than any other chess book ever, this book was greeted with calumny and ridicule when it first came out. However, there has been a re-appraisal. Chess coaches have found this book to be great for teaching chess to their students. It is now highly recommended by a large number of chess coaches and trainers. Computer chess programs have also adopted the concepts introduced in this book. Chess Review magazine called this book “a completely original concept in chess instruction.” This book, via the Point Count, shows the reader how to evaluate these differences and exploit them. What is more, the reader also acquires a working knowledge of more than a score of plans, their mechanisms and physical contours, and the influence they exert in actual play. This book is based on the following premise: Every move on the chessboard is an exchange, a give and take. The very first move, if it is a pawn move, for example, gives away control of the squares that the pawn had previously commanded and takes control of new squares. Similarly at any stage of the game, there is implicit in every move a plus and minus quality. To be sure, these differences of themselves are usually minute and carry little weight. When combined in series of inter-related moves – plans – their effect is to sway the course of the game. Pawn skeletons, chains, salients and other basic features of this valuable unit are compared structurally as to strengths and weaknesses. Outpost stations, wing demonstrations and a host of strategic ideas are described, appraised via the Point Count and illustrated in numerous examples from actual play. Point Count Chess will augment the reader's understanding of the game, enhance his repertoire and determine his proper course of action in each contest, based upon the innate considerations of the position.

The Ruy Lopez: Move by Move (Everyman Chess)

'Move by Move' is a brand new series which provides an ideal platform to study chess openings. This is an excellent way to study any chess opening and at the same time improve your general opening skills and knowledge. In this book, Grandmaster Neil McDonald studies one of the most important openings of all, the Ruy Lopez, which is still regarded as White's strongest choice after 1 e4 e5. Also known as the Spanish Opening, the Ruy Lopez has a long and distinguished history. It's sufficient to say that it has been played by virtually every single great player! Chinese Chess: An Introduction to China's Ancient Game of Strategy

Chinese chess, or ôelephant chess,ö has intrigued the powerful and the quizzical for centuries. Although its rules are similar to the well-known Western game, subtle and fascinating variations must be mastered in order to understand the strategies it requires.

H. T. Lau breaks the silence of decades of publishing on this game and introduces Chinese chess to Westerners, discussing with the aid of 170 diagrams the board, the movement and values of the pieces, and basic rules for capturing and defeating an opponent.

This book includes eighty mid- and end-game excercises designed to sharpen playing skills, and concludes with two appendixes devoted to the elegantly constructed games found in The Secret Inside the Orange and The Plum-Blossom Meter, two classic seventeenth-century works on Chinese chess.

Complete Chess Strategy 1: Planning The Pieces

Ludek Pachman was both one of the world's strongest chess grandmasters and one of the world's greatest writers and teachers of the game. He led a remarkable and amazing but somewhat tragic life. Although one of the world's strongest players who won 15 international tournaments, he never quite made it to the top elite. He won four zonal tournaments and played in six Interzonal tournaments, possibly a record, but he missed qualifying to the World Champion Candidates Tournament by a half-point twice. He played in Interzonals at Saltsjöbaden 1948, Saltsjöbaden 1952, Gothemburg 1955, Portoroz 1958, Amsterdam 1964 and Manila 1976. Pachman was the first chess grandmaster to truly publicly endorse, investigate and recommend computer chess. Pachman played eight tournament games against Bobby Fischer, finishing with an even score. His most famous game is his win over Bobby Fischer in Chile in 1959.

The chief purport of the work on Chess, of which the present volume forms the first part, is the theoretical application of new principles and of the reasoning by analogies of positions which have been my guide in practice, especially during the last twenty years. It is perhaps unnecessary to state that the task which I have set before me was beset with enormous difficulties. Many variations that have been the product of vast changes in the style of play which has taken place in modern times, have no doubt been duly noticed in able treatises on the game, but no attempt has yet been made in any book on Chess to base the analysis systematically on general ideas which would assist the judgment of the student in similar positions. In the present work great efforts are essayed in that direction, especially in the annotation of illustrative games from practical play where the results of the application of the principles recommended for the conduct of the openings and the middle part can be more distinctly traced in the end. But as will be seen from the few examples given in this volume, of reasoning out the opening moves by comparison of different maxims, it would have been practically impossible within the scope of this work to adopt the same sort of commentation throughout the analysis of the openings, and I had to confine myself in that respect to pointing out the most striking examples of the adaptation of principles in the early part of the game. However, I have carefully examined the debuts treated in this volume on the basis of such general maxims, and as the openings have been hitherto analysed by the authorities chiefly in an empirical manner, it became necessary to introduce a very large number of novelties at various stages of variations which, up to the present, had been generally recognized as standard lines of play. In short I have come to conclusion

Dynamic Chess (Hardinge Simpole chess classics)

This scholarly essay in intellectual progress over the chess board shows how the pessimists who thought chess played out - destined to become victim to the death of a thousand draws - were refuted by the dynamic risky games of Alexander Alekhine, whose legacy lived on in the games of Soviet and Russian champions such as Mikhail Tal. With computers taking an ever increasing role in modern chess and challenging the modern champions Kasparov and Kramnik, the author's thoughts on the inexhaustible creative potential of chess assume even greater significance.

Petrosian System Against the QID

The book deals with a reliable and interesting system (1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 e6 3 Nf3 b6 4 a3) which has been played by most of the world's elite, starting with ex-world champion Tigran Petrosian. It is not a repertoire book though. Beliavsky & Mikhalchishin present an objective work which discusses the possibilities of both sides. White's main strategic goal in this system is to build a perfect pawn centre and then organise a kingside attack. Such an approach is much more natural than the modern fianchetto systems against the Queen's Indian Defence. Database statistics seem to confirm that, as White is scoring better with 4.a3 than with 4.g3. The authors' own practical experience shows that they feel comfortably in the Petrosian system with any colour. They are especially effective with White and have not allowed a single loss in 27 years. The structure of this book is similar to other recent Chess Stars publications. Every part starts with a "Main Ideas" section that explains the major plans and typical positions which are then analyzed in the "Move by Move" chapters. The book will be interesting to a wide range of players who enter QID positions as White or Black.

How to Beat the Sicilian Defence

The Sicilian Defence is by far the most popular chess opening. If you play 1 e4 as White, on average you are likely to meet the Sicilian in virtually every other game! You need to be prepared to face the Sicilian at all times, and a ready-to-use repertoire against it is an indispensible weapon.

In this book, Gawain Jones confronts the challenge of meeting the Sicilian head on. He has constructed a comprehensive Anti-Sicilian repertoire for White, which is based on lines that are successfully employed at grandmaster level. These are sound, reliable options for White, but don’t be fooled – they also contain more than a drop of poison. Variations covered include the popular King’s Indian Attack, various Bb5 systems and weapons against Black’s offbeat tries.

* A Grandmaster's repertoire against the Sicilian
* Packed with new ideas and critical analysis
* Highlights key tactical and positional ideas

Computer Gamesmanship

How Computers Learn to Play Games of Strategy This is book is for anyone who has ever tried to match wits with a computer in chess, bridge, or any other game requiring long-range strategy and studied decisions. If you're not a pro, chances are you've been defeated by a machine - and impressed at its uncanny ability to outmaneuver humans. In Computer Gamesmanship, David Levy, an International Chess Master and producer of intelligent computer games, unravels the mysteries of how computers successfully mimic strategic thinking and play complex games. In jargon-free language, Levy describes the important principles and techniques applicable to any game of strategy-such as decision trees, alpha-beta algorithms, minimax searches, and evaluation functions-and explains how even highly advanced strategies can be reduced to relatively simple procedures that a home computer can perform. He then illustrates and elaborates upon them in extensive discussions of the most popular and successful programs for chess, bridge, poker, Go, Othello, and many others. Computer Gamesmanship is a unique introduction and insider's guide to the most challenging games you can play, or create, on your computer. "This is a simply written and serious little book about how computers go about playing games.... (Computer Gamesmanship] leaves the reader with a sense of admiration for the stratagems of computer programmers."

How to Use Computers to Improve Your Chess

Computers have permeated almost every facet of modern chess, yet few players know how to gain the maximum benefit from working with them. Computers function as playing partners, opening study tools, endgame 'oracles', tactics trainers, sources of information on opponents and searchable game databases. Kongsted provides practical advice on how to use computers in all these ways and more. He also takes a look at the history of the chess computer, and how its 'thinking' methods have developed since the early days. The book features an investigation of human vs. machine contests, including the recent Kasparov vs. Deep Junior and Kramnik vs. Deep Fritz matches, in which honours ended even.

The Zukertort System: A Guide for White and Black

Back to the future! Far from a dusty relic once played by great masters such as Rubinstein, Pillsbury, and Bogolyubov, the Zukertort System now enjoys new life. Modern world-class players such as Artur Yusupov, Teimour Radjabov, and Lázaro Bruzón have come to appreciate the Zukertort's rich potential and play it with confidence against strong opposition. The Zukertort System is a fully viable, dynamic 21st-century opening.

Often considered a variation of the better-known Colle System, the Zukertort stands proudly on its own, offering White chances to launch a sharp kingside attack or to work up a slow squeeze on the queenside. In this monograph by Zukertort practitioner IM Grigory Bogdanovich, players of the white pieces will discover how to build on the assets of their position, while players of Black will learn how to defend their territory. All along, the reader is treated to a positional manual on fundamental themes such as hanging pawns, the isolated queen's pawn, and sacrifices to open lines for attack.

Chess Strategy #5 Powerful Pawnplay (Chess Strategy Series)

To become a very strong chess player you have to know how to play
your pawns. In this element of the Chess Strategy Series Study we watch as two of the greatest Grandmasters demonstrate the strategic thinking behind their pawn play and show how vital it is to place supporting pieces with precision.
We then examine a ‘cat and mouse’ game where the winner uses the strategy of switching the focus of the attack - and it’s a master class in exploiting the weakness of doubled pawns.
Bobby Fischer shows that losing the exchange to gain a strategic advantage can be enough to win the game and then there are two mighty, one hundred year old clashes between those legends of the game, Frank Marshall and Jose Capablanca.
Here’s a question for you:- As it’s unlikely that a Grandmaster will have beaten another Grandmaster because the loser fell for a simple tactical trick or suffered from a glaring weakness in his
endgame technique or some other aspect of his game, just what is it that separated them?
The answer is likely to be that one of them had a better grasp of the strategic requirements of the positions which arose.
It's the fine points which make the difference between winning and losing at the highest levels of the game.
Frank Marshall loses twice to Jose Capablanca; in the first game because he doesn’t move his pawns and in the second because he does!
In this series we're looking over the shoulders of the Masters as they play their games; it's the best way to improve your own game.

The Bb5 Sicilian: Detailed Coverage of a Thoroughly Modern System (Everyman Chess)

The Bb5 Sicilian is a logical and practical weapon against Black's most popular defence to 1 e4 and is an excellent choice for White players who are fed up of constantly trying to keep abreast of the latest developments in the Open Sicilian. The early bishop move signals White intention to develop rapidly and it can lead to both wild gambit play and calmer positional waters. Significantly, this opening weapon has the seal of approval from many of today's elite Grandmasters, including Vishy Anand, Mickey Adams and Peter Leko, while Garry Kasparov utilised it successfully in his famous Internet game versus 'the rest of the world'. Now, for the first time in many years, Richard Palliser provides a comprehensive study of the Bb5 Sicilian and its many variations. Using illustrative games, he examines both the crucial main lines and the more unusual tries for White and Black, highlighting tactical and positional ideas as well as move order nuances. A study of this book will allow the reader to play both sides of this opening with confidence. It includes a complete and up-to-date coverage of one of the most important Anti-Sicilian lines, and covers both the Rossolimo and Moscow (3 Bb5+) Variations. It is written by a Bb5 Sicilian expert.

Why is this? Do they know something the rest of us don't? The answer is they do - they know the Rules of Winning Chess.

Birth of the Chess Queen

Everyone knows that the queen is the most dominant piece in chess, but few people know that the game existed for five hundred years without her. It wasn't until chess became a popular pastime for European royals during the Middle Ages that the queen was born and was gradually empowered to become the king's fierce warrior and protector.

Birth of the Chess Queen examines the five centuries between the chess queen's timid emergence in the early days of the Holy Roman Empire to her elevation during the reign of Isabel of Castile. Marilyn Yalom, inspired by a handful of surviving medieval chess queens, traces their origin and spread from Spain, Italy, and Germany to France, England, Scandinavia, and Russia. In a lively and engaging historical investigation, Yalom draws parallels between the rise of the chess queen and the ascent of female sovereigns in Europe, presenting a layered, fascinating history of medieval courts and internal struggles for power.

Your Best Move

“I look one move ahead... the best!”, Siegbert Tarrasch

Chess is a wonderfully rich and complex game, but ultimately the goal can be simply defined as consistently finding the best move. If you are able to do this, you will win your games. However, the million dollar question is: how can we give ourselves the very best chance of doing so?

Per Ostman is convinced that there are three key elements: first and foremost, a structured move-by-move thinking process; second, the desired skills to execute this process; and finally, traditional chess knowledge we can build upon. Ostman examines these three vital building blocks which form the basis of what we need to master. He describes in detail a clear thinking process he has developed over several years as a chess teacher – a process to guide us in our ultimate search to find the best move.

Let's Play Chess: A Step by Step Guide for New Players (The Pandolfini Chess Library)

From the author's Introduction of the first edition: Chess is by far the most popular board game in the world. There are millions of players of all ages and the number keeps growing. Maybe it's because you become a general who directs an army against your opponent in an exciting battle of wits. Whatever the reason, chess is challenging and fascinating. This is my attempt to lure you to the royal game. It's based on the very same lessons I have given to thousands of beginners. Their questions and problems have shaped it. Moreover, some of the best ideas in the book were actually suggested by new players! I have tried to be as direct as possible. To make your journey a smooth one, the fundamentals have been broken down into short, logical statements. Each idea is numbered, ordered, and clearly stated. For the most part, statements are linked in graded sequence with the easier ones preceding the harder. The format is unique and easy to follow. You should feel yourself learning step by step. You will see how chess players think about their moves. Where desirable, explanation has replaced calculation. The stress is on understanding, not memory. There are plenty of diagrams for almost every idea.

Looking for Trouble

This book is written to address an underemphasized area of chess training and study, the identification of and reaction to--threats. For beginner and intermediate-level players, the study of tactics is paramount. Almost all tactics books take the approach of providing a position where there is a forced win, checkmate or draw. However, Looking for Trouble takes a different tack. This book helps players to recognize threats by providing over 200 problems in which players can focus on identifying and meeting threats ranging from extremely easy to fiendishly difficult. The identification of difficult threats how to meet them discussed in a manner that accommodates players of all levels.

Learn Chess Tactics

This book teaches basic tactical ideas such as the fork, pin, and discovered attack, and introduces general ideas such as elimination, immobilization and compulsion. A basic knowledge of simple tactics will enable a novice to start winning games, by giving checkmate or capturing material. As the player progresses, his tactical arsenal will broaden, and he will start to play sacrifices and combinations, and develop a deeper understanding of the game. Players who fail to study tactics systematically tend to suffer from tactical blind-spots that plague them throughout their playing career, and thus they fail to realize their full potential.

The author takes the endgame as an area of chess frequently neglected by players in their studies and shows the various techniques he employs in teaching his students how to analyze positions and learn from them. In particular, he introduces his technique of presenting players with positions and making them play against each other under tournament conditions.

Mitrofanov's Deflection (Annex Annex)

Volume Three of The Tactician's Hand- book continues ICCF IM Charushin's unique look at the fundamental building blocks of tactical play. Here we have his detailed examination of deflections, the "drawing away" of an attacking piece onto an inconvenient square. The sacrifice is marvelous to behold: a piece is given away for nothing, and also with check! This stunning combinational method is here shown to be no lucky accident, but a basic mechanism of tactics in chess. Mitrofanov's Deflection is presented with its own history, then games and studies reinforce the operation of this beautiful tactical device - all in Charushin's inimitable style! The Tactician's Handbook offers a profound new method of exploring chess combinations: one element at a time, in short focused steps.Each volume examines a single, often seen tactical category using carefully selected illustrations. Every example demonstrates the real-world "nuts and bolts" operation of the tactic in question. Readers can immediately apply the skills acquired here, blending the combinational types learned from The Tactician's Handbook into their own games.

Bobby Fischer Goes to War

In the summer of 1972, with a presidential crisis stirring in the United States and the cold war at a pivotal point, two men -- the Soviet world chess champion Boris Spassky and his American challenger Bobby Fischer -- met in the most notorious chess match of all time. Their showdown in Reykjavik, Iceland, held the world spellbound for two months with reports of psychological warfare, ultimatums, political intrigue, cliffhangers, and farce to rival a Marx Brothers film.

Thirty years later, David Edmonds and John Eidinow, authors of the national bestseller Wittgenstein's Poker, have set out to reexamine the story we recollect as the quintessential cold war clash between a lone American star and the Soviet chess machine -- a machine that had delivered the world title to the Kremlin for decades. Drawing upon unpublished Soviet and U.S. records, the authors reconstruct the full and incredible saga, one far more poignant and layered than hitherto believed.

Bobby Fischer Vs the Rest of the World

In 1972, an epic chess match took place in Iceland between representatives of the two great super-powers of the world: Bobby vs. Boris. Boris was backed by the Mighty Soviet Union, with late night phone calls coming from his handlers in Moscow, telling him what his next move should be. Meanwhile, Bobby stood alone against the might of the opposing nation. But, Bobby was not exactly alone. The Americans did not need to tell him what moves to make on the chessboard. Bobby already knew how to do that. Rather, what the Americans needed to do was somehow to get him to sit down at the board and play the game. Here is the story of that titanic struggle: One half of the world trying to get Bobby to play, while the other half was trying to defeat him assuming that he did play. Hence the Title: Bobby Fischer vs. The Rest of the World. In the end, Bobby won. Émigrés from the Soviet Union often state that, more than any other single event, this defeat led to the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Taming the Sicilian: A Repertoire for White Against the Most Popular Black Opening

The Sicilian Defence is Black¿s most ambitious and popular defence to 1 e4. Finding a suitable weapon against it has taxed many a grandmaster¿s brain. Should White dive into the labyrinth of mountainous theory and complications, in which the player who knows the latest theoretical wrinkle is likely to prevail, or should White abstain and instead head for the more tranquil waters of the various Anti-Sicilians on offer? Perhaps the answer lies somewhere in-between! In this book, Grandmaster Nigel Davies tackles the Open Sicilian head on, but still develops an easy-to-use system for White based upon the fianchetto of the king¿s bishop. He arms the readers with an impressive repertoire which enables them to face the Sicilian Defence with renewed confidence.

This book provides a solution. Using an abundance of illustrative games and examples, Gary Lane answers the questions which constantly puzzle players of all levels.
