Endgame Magic (Batsford Chess Book)

An endgame study offers chess tactics in their purest form; there are no wasted pieces and only one solution. This introduction to endgame studies avoids baffling jargon and each study is illustrated by three diagrams. It is designed to be read without a chess set, on a train, bus or aeroplane.

William Steinitz, Chess Champion: A Biography of the Bohemian Caesar

Long known as one of the greatest chess masters of the nineteenth century, William Steinitz had a rich and elevated career and life, which can now be known as well. From Steinitz’s own writings and the fruits of extensive first-time-ever research by the author, a fascinating portrayal emerges of the life and genius of a man widely known as the “Bohemian Caesar” quite apart from his chess dominance. Lengthy annotations for the 15 selected games are provided by modern grandmaster Andy Soltis, often augmented by Steinitz’s own observations. Three additional games are also included. Each game is illustrated.

Counterplay: An Anthropologist at the Chessboard

“Chess gets a hold of some people, like a virus or a drug,” writes Robert Desjarlais in this absorbing book. Drawing on his lifelong fascination with the game, Desjarlais guides readers into the world of twenty-first-century chess to help us understand its unique pleasures and challenges, and to advance a new “anthropology of passion.” Immersing us directly in chess’s intricate culture, he interweaves small dramas, closely observed details, illuminating insights, colorful anecdotes, and unforgettable biographical sketches to elucidate the game and to reveal what goes on in the minds of experienced players when they face off over the board.

Combat: My 50 years at the chessboard

Sidney Bernstein, born in the Bronx, learned chess from his father at age 7, and played in his first tournament at 15. Since then, he has gone on to play in such prestigious events as the U.S. Championship, the U.S. Open Championship, the World Open, the Marshall and Manhattan Club Championships. (He has been champion of both these clubs). He was designated a member of the U.S. team for the U.S.A.-U.S.S.R. match in 1946, and for the 1952 Olympiad, later captaining the U.S. team in the World Postal Olympiad. He also served as advisor to the U.S. team at the 1964 Olympiad. Mr. Bernstein co-edited (with Fred Reinfeld) the books “Art of Chess” and “Kemeri International Tourney, 1937”. He has been awarded the Life Chess Master title by the U.S. Chess Federation. This book is his chess biography. It contains 142 of his annotated games against the leading chess players of America and the story behind each game. The games are tactically sharp and in most cases arise from unusual openings, many of which were invented by Sidney Bernstein himself.

The Modern Morra Gambit: A Dynamic Weapon against the Sicilian

The Dynamic Morra Uncompromising Aggression versus the Sicilian When the first edition appeared more than five years ago, FM Hannes Langrock's groundbreaking work breathed new life into a gambit that conventional wisdom viewed as no more than a nuisance for Black. A nuisance?! Au contraire! As noted by German grandmaster Karsten Müller, "The Morra Gambit is well-suited for players striving for tactical and uncompromising play, as White's better development often leads to a dangerous initiative. Furthermore, traditional Sicilian players may be taken by surprise and removed from their main line repertoire." In this completely revised second edition, the author probes the secrets of this gambit with tactical acuity and strategic objectivity. He concludes that "Most of Black's defensive systems objectively offer acceptable prospects in a complicated battle. Nevertheless, I can promise that every talented attacking player who studies the Morra Gambit will achieve excellent practical results.

Searching for Bobby Fischer: World of Chess Observed by the Father of a Child Prodigy

Along with millions of other Americans, Fred Waitzkin was smitten by chess during the historic Fisher-Spassky championship match in 1972. Inspired by Bobby Fischer's charisma, he began to study the game, but quickly gave it up when he discovered he had little talent for it. His interest was revived a decade later when his young son began coaxing him to play and, to the author's astonishment, was beating him. This is the story of three years in the lives of father and son, from the moment when Josh first sits at a board at the age of six until he wins the national primary championship three years later.

Paul Morphy: Pride and Sorrow of Chess

Paul Morphy: The Pride and Sorrow of Chess is the only full-length biography of Paul Morphy, the antebellum chess prodigy who launched United States participation in international chess and is still generally acknowledged as the greatest American chess player of all time. But Morphy was more than a player. He was a shy, retiring lawyer who had been taught that such games were no way to make a living. The strain of his fame and the pull of his domineering family led Morphy to set another precedent: chess madness. Morphy's mental descent after retiring from chess became a part of his lore, made all the more magnanimous by a spate of twentieth-century examples. The Pride and Sorrow of Chess tells the full known story of the life of Paul Morphy, from his privileged upbringing in New Orleans to his dominance of the chess world, to the later tragedy of his demise.

Point Count Chess: An Accurate Guide to Winning Chess

Perhaps more than any other chess book ever, this book was greeted with calumny and ridicule when it first came out. However, there has been a re-appraisal. Chess coaches have found this book to be great for teaching chess to their students. It is now highly recommended by a large number of chess coaches and trainers. Computer chess programs have also adopted the concepts introduced in this book. Chess Review magazine called this book “a completely original concept in chess instruction.” This book, via the Point Count, shows the reader how to evaluate these differences and exploit them. What is more, the reader also acquires a working knowledge of more than a score of plans, their mechanisms and physical contours, and the influence they exert in actual play. This book is based on the following premise: Every move on the chessboard is an exchange, a give and take. The very first move, if it is a pawn move, for example, gives away control of the squares that the pawn had previously commanded and takes control of new squares. Similarly at any stage of the game, there is implicit in every move a plus and minus quality. To be sure, these differences of themselves are usually minute and carry little weight. When combined in series of inter-related moves – plans – their effect is to sway the course of the game. Pawn skeletons, chains, salients and other basic features of this valuable unit are compared structurally as to strengths and weaknesses.

Los Voraces, 2019: A Chess Novel

The rules of "The Greatest Tournament in Chess History," the $20 million Sheldrake Memorial Tournament, a.k.a. Los Voraces 2019, are: no seconds, no agents, no computers, no entourages, no pagers, no power palms, no phone calls--no outside contact of any kind--as the fourteen greatest chess players in the world gather to compete for money and fame. These geniuses of the game are strange characters--including two Russian world champions solely responsible for article 17.1 of FIDE's Laws of Chess (the "anti-hair-pull rule"), the Rumanian who speaks a "kind of personal Esperanto, using odds and ends of other languages," and a possible member of the Russian mafia--and when the tournament begins with the death of the ninth highest rated player in the world, everyone is under suspicion.

This fabulous chess novel is full of game scores and diagrams--some pretty amazing games are played at Los Voraces! It's all told from the point of view of the arbiter, who is quickly drawn from his role as observer to that of target and suspect. By the time the tournament has only five rounds to go, five corpses have been discovered. Just who is the serial killer with a preference for 2700-rated grandmasters?

This edition is a revision, with illustrations, of a serialized electronic version run by Hanon Russell on ChessCafe from September 2001 to September 2002.

The Soviet school of chess,

This book discusses the first Russian grandmasters and prominent masters, such luminaries as Mikhail Chigorin, Alexander Alekhine, Mikhail Botvinnik, Vasily Smyslov, Paul Keres, Alexander Kotov, Boris Spassky, Mikhail Tal, Alexander Tolush and many others. Also included is a section dedicated to the women players. There are numerous, chessboard diagrams, and page upon page of annotated games and game fragments in the book.

Chess is a national game in Russia. It is played by millions of men, women, and children. Large-scale tournaments are held regularly in factories, offices, and schools.

The Russian style of play is characterized by creative scope, boldness and energy in attack, plus tenacity and resourcefulness in defense. It is founded on scientific methods of studying theory and training for competitions.

The Soviet school of chess,

Alexander Alexandrovich Kotov was born on 12 August. He was a Soviet chess grandmaster and author. One of the strongest players in the world, he set the record for the best score in an Interzonal Tournament for the World Chess Championship, a record Bobby Fischer tried to beat without success. He was a Soviet champion, a two-time world title Candidate, and a prolific chess author. Kotov served in high posts in the Soviet Chess Federation and most of his books were written during the period of Cold War between the US and the USSR. Kotov's books also included frequent praise for the Soviet system in general. The 1958 book The Soviet School of Chess (which he co-wrote with Mikhail Yudovich) stated that "The rise of the Soviet school to the summit of world chess is a logical result of socialist cultural development." Notwithstanding Kotov's forays into the political realm, his books were insightful and informative and were written in a congenial style. He often made his points by citing first-hand stories of incidents involving famous grandmasters, most of whom he knew personally. Such entertaining and enlightening personal accounts helped to ensure that his books would remain popular among chess players of widely varying nationalities and playing strengths. He died on 8 January 1981. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Grandmaster Preparation

In this remarkable book, Soviet grandmaster Lev Polugayevsky, one of the world's leading players over the past two decades, describes his highly personal approach to chess, which is based on meticulous Practice. In the opening he is constantly striving to surprise his opponents, and this has led to his developing one of the sharpest lines in the Sicilian Defense. which has rightly become known as the Polugaevsky Variation. Here we can share the author's joys and disappointments as he attempts over a period of many years to uphold his brain-child against attempts to :bury it. The author then delves into the technique of analyzing adjourned positions, illustrating this by several fascinating. and at times fantastic, examples from his own games. The final chapter describes how he prepares. both technically and psychologically, for decisive encounters where everything is at stake. He illustrates this with games against many leading grandmasters, including seven World Champions.

Grandmaster Preparation

Lev Abramovich Polugaevsky was born on 20 November 1934 in Belarus. He was an International Grandmaster of chess and frequent contender for the world chess championship, although he never achieved that title. He was one of the strongest players in the world from the late 1960s until the early 1980s, as well as a distinguished author and opening theorist whose contributions in this field remain important to the present day. He died on 30 August 1995 in Paris, France. By the late 1960s he was one of the world's strongest players, as was recognized by his participation in the famous "USSR vs. Rest of the World" match of 1970. In this match he occupied fourth board, losing one game to Vlastimil Hort and drawing his other three. Polugaevsky won at Mar del Plata in 1962 and 1971. He won or tied in the USSR Chess Championship three times. He played regularly in qualifying events to select a challenger for the world championship, qualifying for Candidates matches on four occasions.

Chessplayers, of course, are mostly familiar with the California Expert’s later chess stories, “The 64-Square Madhouse” and Midnight by the Morphy Watch”. This volume also features the first California State Chess Federation Ratings list. Definitely a bonus! This volume of California Chess Reporter features first California State Chess Federation Ratings list and a discussion of the controversies concerning the rating system. One result of these efforts is he has compiled every issue of the California Chess Reporter during its 25 year run from 1951 to 1976. One result of these efforts is he has compiled every issue of the California Chess Reporter during its 25 year run from 1951 to 1976. At great personal expense to himself he has had all these volumes bound by a professional binding service. These bound volumes created by Kerry Lawless have been used to make these reprints.

Meet the Masters The Modern Chess Champions and Their Most Characteristic Games

Meet the Masters contains the biographies of the eight strongest players in the world at that time. It includes their histories, photographs, games and an analysis and critique of their playing styles. Each of these eight players had been invited to the historic tournament at AVRO 1938, regarded as the strongest chess tournament ever held prior to modern times. The eight players generally regarded as the strongest in the world were: World Champion Alexander Alekhine, former champions José Raúl Capablanca and Max Euwe, future champion Mikhail Botvinnik and challengers Paul Keres, Reuben Fine, Samuel Reshevsky and Salo Flohr.

Meet the Masters The Modern Chess Champions and Their Most Characteristic Games

Dr. Max Euwe was world chess champion from 1935 to 1937. He played all of the great players from Lasker to Fischer in tournaments and studied all of their games in great detail. He knew more about them and their games than anybody else. Max Euwe was born on May 20, 1901 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He has long been regarded as almost an accidental world champion due to the probably not true rumor that Alekhine was drunk when he lost the world title to Euwe in a 30-game match in 1935. This has resulted in a controversy that is still being debated today: Was Euwe really the strongest player in the world when he won the world championship in 1935? Regardless of that issue, Euwe was certainly the most active and prolific writer about the game. He was never a professional player. He had a real job. He was a math professor. After retirement he became a chess official. He was president of FIDE, the World Chess Federation, from 1970 to 1978. This was during the Cold War and Euwe had to make difficult decisions for the good of chess. It was absolutely, definitely because of Euwe that Bobby Fischer got to sit down at the board to play a match for the World Chess Championship. Fischer had been disqualified many times along the way, the first time being when he refused to play in the US Championship that was a necessary preliminary to the World Chess Championship competition. Max Euwe, himself a past world champion, acted as both referee and official at the famous Iceland matches in 1972. Max Euwe died on November 26, 1981 in his native Amsterdam at age 80.

Warning: This book could help you improve your chess game significantly.

"Imagine having a personal chess mentor, who teaches you thorough problem solving skills for playing chess that drastically improves your game..." Wouldn't that be fantastic? It would also be extremely expensive!

Learning the basic rules of playing chess is only the beginning. Although it is great to play games for entertainment, many chess players want to take their game to the next level. But that is not that easy. Just playing might improve your chess proficiency, but it does not improve your problem solving skills, as that requires different thinking processes. To develop those processes, you need strategies developed by chess experts.

Meet Tim and Anthea. They know what it takes to bring chess to the next level, as they have done that for themselves. How? Through the use of chess tactics. And NOW... it is your turn!

Let Tim and Anthea assist you in improving your chess game by using their specially developed Chess Tactics ebook. This is not just another tactics books, as Tim and Anthea have perfected their ebook by learning from the mistakes other chess authors made. The great part of Tactics Time! 1001 Chess Tactics from the Games of Everyday Chess Players is that:
  • it is error FREE and double checked!
  • it contains original tactics 100% new;
  • it consists of tactics from real chess players.
Many chess books have cool problems and patterns that really are rare and unrealistic, and not needed. Although these are fun to play, they are not really the best way to improve your chess game. That is why this book is different as Tim and Anthea want you to focus on getting good at playing patterns that happen all the time.

But that is not all. Tim and Anthea have chosen to make their ebook very easy to read, leaving out unnecessary information or page fillers. You will see one chess problem per page, with the solution presented to you on the next page. No more need to skip back and forth through the whole book to find that brain wrecking solution.
